2024 – The Most Affordable Teaching Certificate Bachelor’s in Education in the West North Central U.S.
North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri
Here in America’s Heartland, education has always come first. From the one room schoolhouses Laura Ingalls taught in near De Smet, South Dakota, to some of the first school districts being established in Missouri in 1839, to the promise of a free public education being written right into the founding constitution of the State of Iowa in 1846, Midwesterners have always valued schooling. Even in the hardest of times, in a hard land, school came right after getting the crops in.
That’s a tradition that continues today in the states that make up the western north central part of the country:
It’s a more diverse place than it looks on a map, the slow, winding Missouri River knitting together everything from the badlands to the cave-lands along the way. But one thing every one of those states has in common are strong, affordable universities, and a strong demand for well-qualified, community-minded teachers.
If your goal is to become one of those teachers, then one of those universities is going to be a big part of your journey. We put together this list of the most affordable bachelor’s degrees in education in the region offering ITP (Initial Teacher Preparation) programs to get you started.
How We Found The Most Affordable Bachelor’s-Level Teacher Certification Programs in The West North Central States
You might think this sounds like an easy task, but it actually takes a little doing.
First, we built a list of every ITP program in each state offered through accredited colleges and universities. We included both public and private schools, but did our pricing review for them separately.
Next, we got the latest cost-per-credit they list for the Fall 2021-22 school year and then figured the state averages for each group – public and private schools separately. For public schools offering different in-state and out-of-state rates, we strictly used the in-state tuition in our pricing analysis.
Finally, we simply included all the schools with costs that came in below the state average.
That’s it!
We didn’t come at them with a hatchet, though. A couple bucks either way isn’t a big deal, so you might find a few that are right on the wire. But for every school listed here, you’re looking at significant savings over the typical ITP degree in these parts. This simple process ensures that any one of the 80 programs you might choose on this list has a tuition rate that falls within the 50th percentile for your state.
Now, there’s a good reason we separated out the public and private schools here. You’ll see them marked PU or PR on the list. But we only measured public schools against other public schools, and private schools against private schools.
That’s because both types of programs have different strengths and weaknesses, and very different funding:
- A state school leans on public resources to help it balance the budget and can offer steep discounts to in-state residents. On price alone, that makes it hard for private schools to compete.
- Private schools have to do it all out-of-pocket. But on the other hand, a private school often has more selectivity and more prestige that comes with it. Private schools can also be very competitively priced for international students and students coming in from out of state that don’t qualify for in-state discounts at state colleges.
And we know that at this point you only have one question – what is the average cost-per-credit in my state? Here they are:
- North Dakota
- Public – $208
- Private – $392
- South Dakota
- Public – $223
- Private – $909
- Minnesota
- Public – $311
- Private – $1,145
- Nebraska
- Public – $210
- Private – $968
- Iowa
- Public – $264
- Private – $1,111
- Kansas
- Public – $266
- Private – $914
- Missouri
- Public – $250
- Private – $841
As you can see, it’s a pretty big gap! Only you can decide which is the right choice for you. But we gave you the most affordable options in both categories to make the choice.
With a bachelor’s program consisting of 120 semester credits, it’s easy math to figure the totals for a year, or even the entire four-years the program runs.
Pricing is Just a Starting Point for Choosing the Teacher Certification Bachelor’s Program That’s Right for You
Although affordability was our one and only factor in building this list, your decision where to apply will most certainly involve more than that. You care about a lot of things beyond just the pricing. Maybe you want something close to home, maybe you need a unique concentration in Lakota studies in K-12 that you just can’t get anywhere else. We’re giving you a lot of the information you need to consider all those factors, too.
That includes all the concentrations the program offers, everything from those in-depth Lakota studies to the run-of-the-mill secondary math education specialties. We let you know if the program is only offered on-campus, or if there are more flexible online and hybrid options available.
And when it comes to cost, we don’t just tell you what the per-credit cost is, we also give you a sense of how much you’re saving by showing how much lower it is than the state average.
We tell you what the national accreditation status is, too, so you can see if the school took the extra effort to submit their program to the rigors of qualifying for the stamp of approval from NCATE or CAEP.
And we’re not the only ones looking at these schools either. We also let you know if they are getting recognized by other teacher education program evaluators, like the prominent U.S. News & World Report or Washington Monthly.
Every school is unique and every program offers something special. So we also give you the kind of details that can really change your mind about a place, the sort of important bits and pieces that make all the difference. That can include information like:
- Graduation and job placement rates
- Student-faculty ratios
- The history and reputation of the school
- Special qualifications of instructors
- Opportunities for international studies
- Alumni support and networks
- Student clubs and activities available
2024 – Most Affordable Teacher Certification Bachelor’s Programs in the West North Central States
It’s your choice in the end, so you need to do your own homework as to which school offers the exact program that’s going to get you to where you want to be in your teaching career. But we’ve given you everything here you need to make sure you’re not paying too much to achieve that dream.
With total confidence, you can pick any one of the schools on this list and be assured you’re getting the most affordable possible training to become the best possible teacher you can be in your state.
