2025: Most Affordable Teacher Certification Bachelor’s in Education Degree Programs In The West South Central U.S. (TOLA States)
If you live around here, you may know the West South Central region better as TOLA… Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. And we’ll forgive the Texans who most likely think of it as “Texas… and those other places around Texas.”
Wherever you are from here, you recognize it as the American heartland. From food to music to cheap oil… everything we love about America seems to radiate out from around here. Even in the big cities, people are community-minded. And in the small towns, well… you might as well be family.
Education is something that really earns respect here. That’s largely because getting a degree here is more of a hard-won accomplishment in some ways than in other parts of the country. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas all rank near the bottom in the U.S. for educational attainment. Fewer people graduate from high school and fewer go on to college. You’re probably already well aware of that, and chances are, you are interested in becoming a teacher to help do something about it.
To a great extent, teachers are the only ones who are really able to help turn those statistics around. The combination of your teaching skills and the energy you bring to the classroom can actually start to solve that problem, contributing to better high school graduation rates and getting students excited about the possibility of high-tech, high-paying jobs in places like Austin and Oklahoma City. And in doing so, you will be able to foster the sense of community that makes this place so special, all while helping students keep up as the economy becomes more diversified and technologically driven.
But first you have to beat the odds yourself, and at least part of that comes down to figuring out how to keep the costs down. For many families around here, money doesn’t grow on trees, and with the high costs of college today, that means a lot of them struggle to send their kids to the many great schools located here in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
That’s exactly why we put together this list of the most affordable bachelor’s degrees with Initial Teacher Preparation (ITP) programs built-in. All of these programs are specifically designed to satisfy the requirements for a teaching license in either Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, or Arkansas, and all of them offer tuition rates that earn them a place among the most affordable in the region.
How We Found The Most Affordable Teaching Certificate Programs in the West South Central States of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas
How did we come up with the schools on this list? We kept it simple, like you would expect:
- First, we found every qualified ITP program in each of those four states.
- Looking at state schools and private universities separately, we found the state-average cost-per-credit for each group.
- All the programs with lower than average per-credit costs (or nearly lower… no use splitting hairs over a couple of bucks) made the list.
We put public and private schools in separate categories when calculating the average cost because of the simple fact that costs tend to be quite different between the two—but the benefits can be too. A big name private school doesn’t have state funding behind it so it isn’t able to offer residential discounts to in-state students. But those private universities often come with a reputation that helps justify that cost, and can still be very competitively priced for out-of-state and international students who don’t qualify for the state resident discounts that public institutions offer. Discounted in-state tuition rates at state schools are pretty much impossible to beat, making a state school the obvious choice for budget-conscious student teachers, and at the end of the day, their teaching certificate programs will get you the exact same license as any fancy private university.
We believe it’s important to understand the full landscape as far as pricing and options go. Making informed decisions is all about having all the info you need, organized in a way that makes it easy to take in. Ultimately it’s your choice, we’re just trying to make it easier for you to make the right one by providing exactly that kind of info you need at-a-glance.
We already know you’re curious what those average per-credit costs are that schools had to beat to make the cut-off:
- Arkansas
- Public – $239
- Private – $745
- Louisiana
- Public – $224
- Private – $896
- Oklahoma
- Public – $215
- Private – $794
- Texas
- Public – $274
- Private – $961
Factors Other Than Pricing Worth Considering When Choosing a Bachelor’s-Level Teacher Certification Program
Of course, no one picks the school they are going to attend based on pricing alone. You probably have a lot of different factors, from how close the college is to home to where your best friends decided to enroll.
We can’t help you with either of those considerations, but we have included a lot of other information in our list that can help you narrow down your choices within your price range.
For example, the kind of teaching you want to do requires that you get an endorsement in a particular area, like elementary education, English, social studies, or math. So for each school, we tell you exactly what concentrations are available in their bachelor’s in education program to make sure you find the right match for your career goals.
We also tell you what the available program formats are, allowing you to choose between online education, a traditional on-campus program, or a hybrid format that mixes the two together.
We also list accreditation status so you can see what specialty accreditor has evaluated the program, if any. Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) is the big name in teacher prep accreditation. Even though CAEP accreditation by itself isn’t the difference between a good program and a great one, it’s a big enough mark in the plus column to be worth noting. Two other accreditation agencies noted here – NCATE and TEAC – are no longer active since all three organizations consolidated under the CAEP banner in 2016. NCATE and TEAC accreditation granted before that consolidation took place will only remain in place for these schools till the end of the accreditation period, at which point they may elect to pursue renewal through CAEP.
Then we dive into the details, showing you the individual strengths of each program that might be appealing to different students in different situations. We list factors like:
- Particularly small class sizes and high graduate placement rates
- International study options for overseas experience
- Special deals on tuition rates
- Notable approaches to student teaching or learning experiences you can’t find anywhere else
- Campus life options like a wealth of student organizations or activities
- Rankings from third-party evaluators like U.S. News & World Report
And, for each and every school, we give you the breakdown on exactly how much you will be saving in tuition costs by showing how much the per-credit cost is below the state average.
The Most Affordable Teacher Certification Bachelor’s in Education Programs in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas (TOLA)
You’ll still have to do some investigating on your own before you land on the perfect program for you, but we’ve covered all the essential groundwork to get you started. If a respected initial teacher prep bachelor’s program with an affordable price tag is what you’re looking for to launch your teaching career in the TOLA region, we’re confident you’ll find the perfect fit right here on this list.
