2024: The Most Affordable Bachelor’s in Education Teacher Certification Programs in the Mountain Region
The Mountain West, as everyone who lives here knows, remains the Real West of the United States. You’re more likely here in the Arizona desert, the Colorado Western Slope or the high plains of Montana and Wyoming to live a lifestyle that defines the Western ideals of freedom and self-reliance than almost anywhere else in the country
It’s also a region where the tech industry is rapidly advancing, and for that reason, education is highly valued. From supercomputing projects at Los Alamos to nuclear research at the Idaho National Laboratory, we have thousands of jobs that rely on having well-trained, well-informed college-bound students coming out of our local schools every year.
Those schools need teachers to prepare students ready for the rigors of college; more and more of them every year in expanding metros like Denver and Phoenix. And soon enough, when you complete your bachelor’s degree and initial teacher training program, you’re going to be joining that dedicated group yourself.
But while we value a good education here, we also still hold on to the traditional Western belief that we should get every bit of what we pay for. That doesn’t mean we mind ponying up a tidy sum for what we need, we just expect a good value.
More than that, we know the value of community… keeping your teacher training program close to home will keep you in touch with the very same people who will be hiring you in a couple years. It will also keep you close to the families and friends you’ll be working with, and whose kids you will be teaching. It might even be your dream to teach in the very same school system that you grew up in; and with the right degree and teacher prep program that’s a goal you can definitely achieve.
That’s why we felt that a regional focus was important as we took on the task of putting together this list of the most affordable bachelor’s-level ITP (Initial Teacher Preparation) programs for aspiring teachers in the Mountain Region.
Whether you’re interested in earning your degree in the snowy mountain towns of the northern Rockies or the hot desert badlands, you’ve got plenty of choices for schools offering the exact degree program you’re looking for at a price that won’t break the bank.
How We Identified the Most Affordable Teaching Certificate Bachelor’s Degrees in the Mountain Region
You don’t need a complicated formula to find schools offering ITP bachelor’s in education programs with the lowest tuition rates, you just need the time to review them all and perform a simple cost comparison. Time is the valuable thing here, and since we’ve put in the hours to perform that tuition analysis so that you don’t have to, the real value in this list is in the time it saves. On top of that, you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing that by going with one of these programs you’re getting a great deal.
Here’s how we approached the project:
First we identified every single accredited state and private college offering bachelor’s in education ITP programs in the entire Mountain Region as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau – that means Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.
Average Cost of Public and Private School Programs by State
We then separated them by state, and then split the list for each state intro two categories: public and private colleges. We then simply found the average cost-per-credit in each state for each category. And to put the final touch on the project, we simply included every program with a tuition rate that comes in below the state average – with state schools and private colleges shown separately. That’s it.
So what you end up with is a guide that you can quickly scan to find the average per-credit cost of a state school or private college ITP bachelor’s… and all of the schools that charge tuition rates that come in below the state average.
Why We Found Averages for Public and Private Colleges Separately
There’s a very practical reason why we categorize public and private schools separately. With state funding in their pockets, state schools often charge quite a bit less to in-state students, offering a discounted rate that private schools can’t compete with. Private schools, on the other hand, may have to charge higher rates in general, but are still sometimes the more affordable option for out-of-state and international students, and sometimes also come with a kind of name recognition that has a certain value of its own. You may have a preference for one or the other, so we felt it was most equitable to give you a chance to see how the tuition rates stack up for both.
We always looked exclusively at the lower in-state rates for public schools when finding those averages, but include the non-residential rates in the listings as well since it’s still information pertinent to aspiring teachers throughout the region considering all their options.
Cost Isn’t Everything When It Comes To Preparing for Your Teaching Career
On top of telling you exactly how those per-credit rates for each program stack up against the state average, we’ve put together plenty of other good information about these programs that will help you narrow down your options when it comes time to submit applications. You will have to do your own research when you get down to the nitty gritty of picking out your preferred school, but we’ve given you plenty of information to help you better identify the programs that align with your career goals.
Other information you’ll find in each of our write-ups includes valuable data like:
- Content area concentrations each school offers so you can line up the license endorsement categories with the subjects you plan to teach
- The program format, letting you pick out online or hybrid classes if you prefer that kind of flexibility, or on-campus courses if you prefer the more traditional approach
- Any notable extras that a program might offer, whether it has a unique partnership with some local agency or offers bilingual teaching opportunities
- Whether or not the program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) (TEAC and NCATE will soon be consolidated under CAEP)
- Special recognition or awards from third-party organizations like the Carnegie Foundation or U.S. News & World Report… you know if those big East Coast companies sit up and take notice of a humble Mountain Region school, it has to be something special
- Low student-to-faculty ratios for extra face-to-face teaching time and attention
- Special student teaching opportunities or arrangements that you might not find elsewhere
State-by-State Guide to the Most Affordable Teaching Certificate Bachelor’s in Education Programs in the Mountain Region for 2024
Somewhere on this list, you’re going to find a friendly, affordable, local school that lines up with exactly the kind of certification experience you are looking for on your path to becoming a teacher. And one thing we can confidently guarantee is that whichever school you go with, you’ll be getting that experience at the best price available.
